Before the Cabins, Before the Name
/Island Park’s story, one rhyme at a time
You come for the cabins, the trails, and the snow,
The rivers where anglers cast gently and slow.
But under the pines, there’s a tale tucked away—
A past that helped shape what we treasure today.
A landscape born of fire
Before there were porches with mountain-top views,
Or travelers debating which trail they should choose,
Great eruptions reshaped this remarkable ground,
Leaving clues in the country that stretches around.
Two million years back—and a little bit more—
One chapter began with a powerful roar.
Another came later, and lava would spread,
Across parts of the basin where visitors tread.
A caldera forms when the ground settles down
Above emptied magma—a great sunken crown.
The landscape kept changing as ages passed through,
Creating the setting now waiting for you.
A name with a story
Why “Island Park,” with no ocean in sight?
The question itself makes a good fireside night.
One local account takes us back through the trees,
To clearings and creeks, and a name born of these.
A “park” was an opening where forest gave way,
A welcome place travelers could pause in their day.
One clearing, with waterways tracing its side,
Resembled an island where streams slipped and curled wide.
The railroad would carry the Island Park name,
And postal connections helped spread it the same.
From one named location, its reach slowly grew,
To country much broader than travelers once knew.
The neighbors with fur and feathers
There’s more to this story than railways and stone;
The woods have a life and a voice of their own.
An elk at the timberline, tracks in the snow,
A beaver at work where the quiet streams flow.
The osprey looks down while the trout hold below;
The lodgepoles stand tall as the seasons come, go.
Wildflowers bring color when warm days return,
And each little clearing has something to learn.
Look a little closer
So come for the fishing, the cabins, the view,
But leave room for stories to travel with you.
Look past the next turn and the plans for your stay—
There’s history beneath every beautiful day.
Find your next adventure, wherever you roam,
At Visit Island Park Idaho—your guide away from home.
